The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
