Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
