British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
